Every kind and encouraging word from friends & strangers alike warms my heart and soothes my soul.
On behalf of the City of Hendersonville, I would like to say congratulations to “Chalk It Up” on celebrating 30 years of bringing creativity, color, and community spirit to life! This beloved event continues to inspire artistic expression while fostering unity and patriotic pride. With this year’s theme, “America the Beautiful” we celebrate not only the talent of our artists, but also the beauty, diversity, and shared values that make our community and nation so special. Here is to three decades of creativity and many more years of vibrant inspiration!
Sincerely,
Barbara G. Volk, Mayor

“Chalk It Up!” is far more than an event. It has become a tradition that has helped shape the cultural spirit of our downtown and has brought generations of families together in a joyful and creative way. I still remember bringing my son when he was young and watching him kneel on the sidewalk, completely absorbed in turning a simple box of chalk into something he was proud of. It was one of those small moments that stays with a parent. Experiences like that remind us how powerful creativity can be in a child’s life.
To grow from three children drawing outside a storefront into a gathering of more than 150 artists of all ages is a remarkable accomplishment. You created a space where creativity is open to everyone. A five year old can draw beside a professional artist and both feel part of the same celebration. That kind of community spirit is rare and it says a great deal about your dedication.
Hendersonville has always taken pride in being a city with a heart for art. Your event has helped bring that identity to life year after year. It fills Main Street with families, encourages young artists, and brings people together in a way that few events can. Art does not always need to hang on a gallery wall to matter. Sometimes it lives on the sidewalk where neighbors stop, smile, and share a moment together.
Celebrating your thirtieth anniversary with the theme “America the Beautiful” feels especially meaningful. As our nation approaches an important milestone in its history, your event reminds us that art is one of the ways we tell our shared story. Seeing artists of all ages create scenes that reflect our country, its landscapes, and the people who shaped it will be a wonderful tribute to both community and country.
Congratulations on thirty years of dedication, creativity, and service to Hendersonville. Our community is more vibrant because of your work. I wish you continued success and look forward to seeing Main Street come alive with color once again.
With appreciation,
Jeff Miller
We are grateful to participate in all 30 years of Chalk it Up. While the art eventually fades throughout the day/week- the memories It has created for us are irreplaceable.
We have so much gratitude for Barbara at Narnia Studios for building up this event with the support of other local businesses. Thank you for giving us these 30 years of unforgettable moments.

“Chalk It Up!” celebrating 30 years is a remarkable milestone, and it reflects a deep and sustained commitment to creativity, community, and the spirit of downtown Hendersonville.
To see something that began so simply grow into a tradition that welcomes artists of all ages is truly meaningful. The fact that it remains accessible and free to participants speaks to the care and intention behind it, and to the role it has played in bringing people together and adding to the cultural life of the community over many years.
While the Tourism Development Authority must remain mindful of its role with respect to formal endorsements, I do want to recognize this milestone year and the contribution “Chalk It Up!” has made to Hendersonville across three decades.
Thank you for the time, energy, and consistency it has clearly taken to sustain this event over so many years—it shows.
Wishing you a wonderful and well-attended 30th anniversary celebration!
Sincerely,
Michelle Owens

I began bringing my children downtown to Chalk-It-Up in its early years. We loved the opportunity to create art on the public sidewalks with the bonus of maybe winning an award for our designs. My husband wasn't an artist. He enjoyed getting a cup of coffee and visiting with passers-by.
My own children and many others have grown up looking forward to July and being a part of it -- to the point where now my grandchildren are excited to plan out their creations at Chalk-It-Up. It's become something of a family reunion. May Chalk-It-Up continue for many years!

I discovered chalkart a few years ago. I have been a participant for the past two years. So, im not a long time participant...yet.
Being a participant is so much fun! Whether I win or not, the camaraderie with other artists of all ages is such an atmosphere of community. Engaging with passersby broadens that community.
Our world might be big, but when art creates community, we learn we are closer than we know.
