Bridal fair lets couples, vendors mix and meet

With a slice of wedding cake in one hand and a fruity cocktail in the other, John Denison of Mills River discovered that attending a bridal fair isn’t such a bad way to spend a Sunday after all.

And since Denison and his fiance, Ashley Featherstone of Asheville, are paying for their Oct. 1 wedding themselves, Denison was more inclined to immerse himself in the planning process.
“I’m fine with it; it’s harder on her than me,” Denison said. “I help when I can, but a lot of it is the bride’s arena.”
On Sunday, Featherstone and other soon-to-be brides from as far away as Spartanburg, S.C., were exposed to more than 20 vendors during the fifth annual Hendersonville Bridal Fair at the Inn on Church.
Denison and Featherstone attended the bridal fair at the Asheville Civic Center last month but still had a couple of items left on their checklist.
“We still need a dress and flowers,” Denison said, “so she’s on the hunt for those two things, and this is the most central place to see everything.”
Vendor Barbara Hughes, owner of Narnia Studios in downtown Hendersonville and a co-organizer of the event, called this a “boutique” bridal fair.
“And that’s different from the mega-bridal fairs in that you’re meeting with all local vendors, and you can have one-on- one time with them and ask them all the questions you want,” Hughes said while standing behind her table of fresh-cut flowers.
It also was a great opportunity for businesses such as Fairy Tale Gowns, a new bridal boutique in Mills River that specializes in new, vintage and “gently worn” high-end gowns sold at 50 to 80 percent off retail value.
The business, owned by sisters Barbara Duff and Kathy Engheta, is having a soft opening on Wenesday, so the timing of the fair was ideal.
And Hughes said the event’s new date worked well for everyone. “Normally we do it right after New Year’s because brides get their rings at Christmas and New Year’s,” she said. “But they also get them on Valentine’s Day, so it’s good timing.”
And with football season now over, “the men are not doing Super Bowl,” Hughes added with a chuckle, “so it’s perfect. And you do see the guys come with (the brides), which is great.”
